About Visnja Clayton

At F.I.T., Visnja majored in apparel design and created swimwear, daywear, tailored clothing, active sportswear, evening and menswear.  Visnja graduated with honors and moved to Italy to take a position as an assistant designer of sportswear with FILA of Milan.  Visnja returned to New York the next year to broaden her experience by working as an assistant designer for Carla Leathers, a producer of high fashion leather garments.  She then joined EccoBay Sportswear as head designer.  Subsequently Visnja accepted an offer to join Marc Bouwer Ltd. as Mr. Bouwer’s chief design assistant.  For two years Visnja oversaw the design and production of the Bouwer line of evening wear and personally served the needs of such specialty clients as Raquel Welch, Boy George, Morgan Fairchild, and Diana Ross.  At Bouwer, Visnja was also involved in costume design for several Broadway Productions.

Mr. Bouwer surprised Visnja by sometimes taking her away from the design table to make her the lead model for the company’s new creations.  This led Visnja to accept occasional modeling requests form other designers such as Liz Claiborne, Bill Blass, Valentino and Christie Brinkley Sportswear.  Her modeling experience taught her a great deal about the design successes and failures of today’s fashions.

Visnja left Marc Bouwer Ltd. to launch her own company simply called “Visnja”.  This line consisted mainly of women’s couture eveningwear.  Although the customers were mostly private clientele, David Cameron, a hot new fashion designer on Seventh Avenue, noticed Visnja’s design abilities.  He recruited her to work as his design assistant and muse, where she became an integral part of the team.

In 1991 Visnja received a degree in Film and Television Production from New York University. Her most recent accomplishment was as Costume Designer on the film “After Image” starring John Cougar Mellencamp and Louise Fletcher and a Script Supervisor for "Hell's Kitchen", starring Angelina Jolie.

In 1996 she completed her own 20 minute film "Babushka" which has received several prizes from the International Film Community.  This film also recently won the Bronze Medal in the Experimental-Narrative division at the Charleston International Film Festival and has received Honorable Mention at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado.  "Babushka" has also premiered in Denver at the Independent Denver Film Festival '97 and in Durango, Colorado, alongside "Breathless", by Jean-Luc Godard.  It recently won best Foreign Short Film at the Malescorto Film Festival in Italy.

In 2001 she founded and directed Art Web, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving Central New Jersey arts education.  One of the events held was the highly successful Independent Dover Film Festival, in Dover, NJ, 35 miles from New York City.

Her first venture in Portland, Oregon, launched in 2013 is a collection dedicated to modernism and all of its possibilities. The range of garments varies in styling from vintage inspired jackets to innovative and previously unexplored ideas in eveningwear. The constant throughout the collection is the sumptuousness of the fabrics and the sophisticated ease of the designs. It is the fashionista's answer to the endless search for the perfect all encompassing collection.

Visnja's artwork has also been gaining a steady stream of fans, most recently in a show at Portland's hip Albina Press cafe on Hawthorne.

Visnja currently lives upstate NY where she is renovating an 1885 farmhouse.

Her new book "The Nourishment Guide for Women" is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
